Native tribes once set fires to help keep forests in balance. "Native American fire culture in California and the Pacific Northwest created a biodiverse mosaic of forests and woodlands interspersed with open meadows that served as natural fire breaks." Even though these practices were banned, Californian authorities are returning to them, in what has been the worst fire year ever recorded in the state. Richard Schiffman reports.
